DESCRIPTION:The real-time exuberance Tommy Emmanuel brings to every note of every song he plays is palpable and infectious. His fans are in love with his unbound talent as a guitarist of multitudes, his ability to play three parts at once, always with pure heart and real soul. He is a true virtuoso. But he seems as delighted always with the magic of the music as the audience, if not more, and his joy illuminates everything.\NIt’s one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistibly infectious invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. “The joy, " he says, “is there always because I’m chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in peoples’ eyes is worth living and working for... I can’t help but play to the people with all my heart, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I’ve worked all my life for. And here it is!”\NThat authentic exuberance Tommy brings to every show and every record is especially powerful, given the profound deficit of real joy in so many lives. Tommy’s happiness, like his music, is pure and expressed in real-time. Nothing is phony. It’s a quality that does reach far beyond any one language, and it’s instantly understood by all his fellow humans. It’s the reason he smiles so much while playing, and why his audience does as well. As many have said, it’s hard not to be happy at his shows. Because his joy, and the timeless river of inspiration, which is the source, is universally recognized. And it feels good.\NIn 2018, Tommy made the great album, Accomplice One, a series of duets with musicians great and varied, and all at his level. It’s a concept that worked, as the range of artists reflected Tommy’s expansive love of all kinds of music, including Rodney Crowell, Mark Knopfler, Amanda Shires, Jason Isbell, Jerry Douglas, Jake Shimabukuro and more. Each of his accomplices seemed as inspired by his energy and passion as much as Tommy was by theirs, and he played with effortless grace.\NNow comes the long-awaited sequel, Accomplice Two. It shares the same exuberance, diversity, and sense of adventure as the first album, with a great range of artists. This album features rock legends Michael McDonald, Jorma Kaukonen, and Little Feat; bluegrass superstars such as Billy Strings, The Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Sierra Hull, and David Grisman; country icons such as Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jamey Johnson, and Raul Malo; and guitar heavyweights like Yasmin Williams, Larry Campbell, and Richard Smith. The first single “White Freight Liner Blues” is out now and features the Grammy award winner and claw hammer guitarist, Molly Tuttle.\NTommy also has a new television special called Accomplice LIVE! which begins airing on PBS in March of 2023. This special features some of Tommy’s best-known songs and duets with his accomplices such as Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Sierra Hull, Yasmin Williams, and many others.\NTommy was born in 1955 in Muswellbrook, New South Wales Australia, and started playing the guitar at age four. In his twenties, he was the most sought-after performer and session musician in Sydney. By age 30, he was burning on electric guitar with several rock bands in stadiums across Europe. He could have gone on to live the rock star life. Yet, he yearned for something purer and closer to his heart. Casting off the reliable rock band engine of monstrous sonics blasting, Tommy went acoustic.\NThe inspiration for Tommy’s transformation was his hero, Chet Atkins, who represented the purity of one man, one guitar, and unlimited passionate for serving the song. Eventually Tommy met his hero and started a lifelong friendship which shaped Tommy’s music forever. Chet welcomed Tommy into guitarist knighthood by bestowing upon him the coveted title of CGP (Certified Guitar Player), an honor awarded only to four other humans ever, and they recorded an album together, The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World. Receiving the love and esteem of Chet lifted Tommy into a different realm. Because, as Chet recognized instantly and told the world, musicians like this don’t come along that often; pay attention to this man. And people have paid attention from sold out shows all over the world to multiple Grammy nominations, ARIA Awards, IBMA Awards, and countless “Best Acoustic Guitarist” wins in numerous music magazine readers polls.... the world is taking notice.

DESCRIPTION:Fort Desolation isn’t a place. It’s the notion that the road can always take you somewhere wonderful—where you can climb a mountain, soak in a secret swimming hole, gaze at a starry sky and get as lost as you want to be. That’s what inspires us as we create gatherings and goods for outdoor adventure travelers, music lovers and everyone in between.\NFort Desolation Fest returns this June 6-8, once again giving attendees three days to explore the Capitol Reef National Park area and three nights to enjoy an incredible lineup of live music in the red rocks of Cougar Ridge Resort in Torrey, Utah.\NIt’s All About the Experience\NFort Desolation Fest keeps things small to ensure a premium experience for all. By limiting attendance to a fraction of what most major festivals allow, we can better pay attention to the things that matter most. “It’s pretty simple, really: By keeping attendance down, you ensure people can move around comfortably, get close to the music—and order food, drinks or find a restroom without making it a major endeavor. This has been a core value for us since we started, and our attendees have made it clear that they appreciate it,” said Jeremy Rawle, founder of Fort Desolation Fest.\NDouble the Camping Space This Year\NThe Fort Desolation Fest campground has become a legendary experience over the years. From after-hours jams with festival artists to campsite cook-offs to stargazing in this International Dark Sky Community, there’s a lot to love. We know more people want to be able to stay on-site at the festival, but camping always sells out fast. So we’ve doubled that space for 2024 with the new Sidewinder Campground that’s just a short walk from the main stage.\NIntroducing a New Glamping Experience\NFor those who want to experience the campground with the niceties of a luxury hotel, we’ve added a new glamping experience. Glampers will stay in a Scandinavian-inspired tent and have access to a concierge lounge, baggage assistance, parking, a morning coffee and pastry bar and much more. Attendees who are even more “indoorsy” will find plenty of other lodging in and around the Torrey area.\NNational Park Adventures\NFort Desolation Fest takes place just a few miles from Capitol Reef National Park, one of Utah’s “Mighty Five” national parks. The music takes place at night, so attendees have three days to craft their own adventures in the awe-inspiring red-rock cliffs, canyons, domes and arches of the surrounding landscapes. From hiking to fly-fishing to cycling to off-roading, there’s something for everyone in the area.\NVolunteer Opportunities\NLocal Torrey-area volunteers can exchange volunteer hours for a music pass. And select traveling volunteers can volunteer for a music pass and a spot in our volunteer campsite. Email info@fortdesolation.com to find out about any open volunteer positions.

SUMMARY:Old Crow Medicine Show
CREATED:20240304T160258Z
DTSTAMP:20240304T160258Z

DESCRIPTION:Since getting their start busking on street corners back in 1998, Old Crow Medicine Show have emerged as one of the most potent and influentialforces in American roots music. Over the last quarter-century, the two-time Grammy Award-winning band has brought their sublimely raucous live show to rapturous audiences around the world and toured with the likes of Willie Nelson and John Prine, all while amassing an acclaimed catalog that includes such standouts as their double- platinum hit single “Wagon Wheel.” Arriving as the Nashville-based six-piece gears up to celebrate their 25th anniversary, Jubilee finds Old Crow doubling down on their commitment to creating roots music that bears an undeniable urgency. “In a lot of people’s minds folk music seems to be relegated to a place of supposed purity, but we’ve always wanted our folk music to be the soundtrack to real living rather than something stuck behind the glass in a museum,” says frontman Ketch Secor. “We’d much prefer to smash that glass and take those instruments back to the street corners, maybe break some strings and bleed on them a bit. To us music works best when you sing it loud and hard and lusty until your throat gets sore—it’s meant to hurt when it comes out right.”\NOld Crow’s eighth studio LP, Jubilee serves as something of a companion piece to Paint This Town—a 2022 release that marked their first time cutting an album with band members Jerry Pentecost, Mike Harris, and Mason Via. “We made Paint This Town before we’d even played any shows with this lineup, so it felt right to get back into the studio with our new partners-in-crime after we’d been out on the road and felt all greased-up,” says Secor. Like its predecessor, Jubilee finds Old Crow producing alongside Matt Ross-Spang (Drive-By Truckers, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, The Mountain Goats) and recording at their own Hartland Studios in East Nashville. Featuring guest appearances from legendary soul singer Mavis Staples and singer/songwriter Sierra Ferrell, the result is a wildly expansive body of work encompassing everything from jug-band tunes to Irish folk songs to exultant gospel jams, each touched with Old Crow’s dazzling musicality and poetic yet powerfully trenchant storytelling.\NAfter kicking off with “Ballad of Jubilee Jones” (a soul-stirring anthem of resilience for the working people of the world), Jubilee slips into tender reminiscence on “Miles Away”—a sweetly reflective track graced with guest vocals from Old Crow co-founder Willie Watson. “We hadn’t recorded with Willie in 12 years, and it made sense to bring him back for a song that has to do with seeing old friends again,” says Secor. “It’s about looking back on the past and accepting that people sometimes part ways, and yet time can mend things. There could be a scar in the earth, then a few years go by and now it’s a Walmart parking lot or a garden.” Co-written by Secor and bluegrass virtuoso Molly Tuttle, “Miles Away” unfolds in delicate banjo runs and luminous fiddle melodies before building to a sweeping string section at the bridge, lending even greater poignancy to Old Crow’s warmly dispensed wisdom (“So if you run into some lost friend or lover/And find only reticence remains/Grab the saddle horn and just throw your body over/Don’t let the past hold the reins”).\NWhile songs like “Miles Away” embody a bittersweet gravity, much of Jubilee harnesses the unruly exuberance that Old Crow unfailingly channel into their live show. On “Keel Over And Die,” for instance, the band delivers a frenetic and freewheeling love song whose lyrics endlessly tilt from ecstatic to macabre. “It’s one of those just-getting-over-divorce songs where you’ve finally found someone you’re crazy about but nothing else is right in your life, so you can only express joy in death metaphors,” says Secor. “I think I write songs like that because I’m a fan of Shane MacGowan and all the antics of bands who use traditional music as a soundtrack for some kind of brawl, whether it’s a sporting match between cross-town rivals or people picking a fight in an alley over love.” Later, on “I Want It Now,” Old Crow unleash a gloriously sordid and dance-ready party song spotlighting their knack for fantastically unhinged wordplay (e.g., “Freight-train-hopping, purple-pill- popping, bluegrass-bopping/You know what I need, I want it now”). “On every album we ever make, Old Crow tends to put revelers, corn whiskey, and the cops all together in a stretch of woods somewhere,” says Secor. “‘I Want It Now’ is the latest offering in that 25-year batch of debauchery; it’s your typical story of a hillbilly love triangle and a party that just won’t quit.”\NOn “One Drop” (featuring Mavis Staples), Jubilee closes out with its most rejoiceful track, a spirit- lifting gospel number propelled by triumphant harmonies and bustling hand percussion. As Staples, Secor, and Pentecost trade off vocals, “One Drop” speaks to the potential for profound change in times of overwhelming darkness and disillusionment (“It takes one step before the saints go marching/It takes one march before we’ve got a movement marching in/It takes all kind of saints in step together/‘Fore we stand in union hand in hand”). “‘One Drop’ is typical of any Old Crow gospel jam in that we leave the deity TBD, so that you can fill in whatever feels right to you,” says Secor. “We took some inspiration from the Pete Seeger School of Theatrics, where songs of a spiritual persuasion become a rallying cry. One line builds on the line before it, and it ends up as a sort of equational transaction in which we’re trying to figure out our way to peace.”\NIn keeping with the sociopolitical consciousness of Paint This Town (an album that confronted such complex matters as country music’s thorny racial politics), Jubilee also brings Old Crow’s incisive perspective to tracks like “Allegheny Lullabye”—a sorrowful yet fiery meditation on systemic poverty and lack of opportunity in regions like Appalachia (“With a hand on the bottle and one on the wheel, won’t be slave to the iron and steel/The choices are no choice at all, just the flipping of a coin/It’s factory, gas station, or join”). “I wanted to have a song about the pervasiveness of hopelessness, which to me is one of the defining factors of life in America in 2023,” says Secor, who drew inspiration from Sam Quinones’s Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic in penning the lyrics to “Allegheny Lullabye.” “I know a lot of people in towns like we’re describing, where there’s basically a three-track system: you can work at the factory and get nowhere, work at the gas station and get nowhere, or join the Army or the rat race. To me those options aren’t enough for the region that gave us songs like ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken?’, and I’m mad as hell at the elected officials who are doing nothing to change that opportunity-distribution load.”\NAs Secor reveals, Old Crow’s boundless passion for imbuing a timely vitality into traditional music has played a major part in the band’s longevity. “Being the type of songwriters and performers that we’ve always been, we tend toward the topical material and what’s going on right now—the issues currently faced by our species, our country, our beloved Southlands,” he says. “I think the artist’s job is to dip their quill into the reservoir of the now, and for Old Crow that reservoir is deep: we might end up pulling up some Lead Belly colors, some Gene Austin colors or some Paul Robeson. So as long as these things keep happening in our world, and as long as banjos are around to be plucked and fiddles are there for us to drag a bow across, you can bet we’ll still be interested in making this kind of music. At this point it’s just our second nature.”

On “Keel Over And Die,” for instance, the band delivers a frenetic and freewheeling love song whose lyrics endlessly tilt from ecstatic to macabre.&nbsp;“It’s one of those just-getting-over-divorce songs where you’ve finally found someone you’re crazy about but nothing else is right in your life, so you can only express joy in death metaphors,” says Secor. “I think I write songs like that because I’m a fan of&nbsp;Shane MacGowan and all the antics of bands who use traditional music as a soundtrack for some kind of brawl, whether it’s a sporting match between cross-town rivals or people picking a fight in an alley over love.” Later, on “I Want It Now,” Old Crow unleash a gloriously sordid and dance-ready party song spotlighting their knack for fantastically unhinged wordplay (e.g., “Freight-train-hopping, purple-pill- popping, bluegrass-bopping/You know what I need, I want it now”). “On every album we ever make, Old Crow tends to put revelers, corn whiskey, and the cops all together in a stretch of woods somewhere,” says Secor. “‘I Want It Now’ is the latest offering in that 25-year batch of debauchery; it’s your typical story of a hillbilly love triangle and a party that just won’t quit.”</p><p>On “One Drop” (featuring Mavis Staples),&nbsp;Jubilee&nbsp;closes out with its most rejoiceful track, a spirit- lifting gospel number propelled by triumphant harmonies and bustling hand percussion. As Staples, Secor, and&nbsp;Pentecost trade off vocals, “One Drop” speaks to the potential for profound change in times of overwhelming darkness and disillusionment (“It takes one step before the saints go marching/It takes one march before we’ve got a movement marching in/It takes all kind of saints in step together/‘Fore we stand in union hand in hand”). “‘One Drop’ is typical of any Old Crow gospel jam in that we leave the deity TBD, so that you can fill in whatever feels right to you,” says Secor. “We took some inspiration from the Pete&nbsp;Seeger School of Theatrics, where songs of a spiritual persuasion become a rallying cry. One line builds on the line before it, and it ends up as a sort of equational transaction in which we’re trying to figure out our way to peace.”</p><p>In keeping with the sociopolitical consciousness of&nbsp;Paint This Town&nbsp;(an album that confronted such complex matters as country music’s thorny racial politics),&nbsp;Jubilee&nbsp;also brings Old Crow’s incisive perspective to tracks like “Allegheny Lullabye”—a sorrowful yet fiery meditation on systemic poverty and lack of opportunity in regions like Appalachia (“With a hand on the bottle and one on the wheel, won’t be slave to the iron and steel/The choices are no choice at all, just the flipping of a coin/It’s factory, gas station, or join”). “I wanted to have a song about the&nbsp;pervasiveness of hopelessness, which to me is one of the defining factors of life in America in 2023,” says Secor, who drew inspiration from Sam Quinones’s&nbsp;Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic&nbsp;in penning the lyrics to&nbsp;“Allegheny Lullabye.” “I know a lot of people in towns like we’re describing, where there’s basically a three-track system: you can work at the factory and get nowhere, work at the gas station and get nowhere, or join the Army or the rat race. To me those options aren’t enough for the region that gave us songs like ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken?’, and I’m mad as hell at the elected officials who are doing nothing to change that opportunity-distribution load.”</p><p>As Secor reveals, Old Crow’s boundless passion for imbuing a timely vitality into traditional music has played a major part in the band’s longevity.&nbsp;“Being the type of songwriters and performers that we’ve always been, we tend toward the topical material and what’s going on right now—the issues currently faced by our species, our country, our beloved Southlands,” he says. At this point it’s just our second nature.”</p>

Together a sum of more than their staggering parts, the trio revolutionized bluegrass and folk in the early 2000s and ushered in a new era of what we now recognize as Americana music.\NAfter a nine year absence, the Platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning trio returned in 2023 with the highly-anticipated album, Celebrants—a bounty of 18 disparate but loosely connected songs written collectively during a creative retreat in Santa Barbara in early 2021. The result is perhaps the most audacious yet accessible release of the Grammy-winning trio’s 34-year career.\NThe entire enterprise is, naturally, shot through with the trio’s virtuosic picking and shiver-inducing harmonies. The lyrics—addressing love, friendship, time, and the universal travails of travel—combine the poetic and plain-spoken, hitting a sweet spot of ethereal and relatable as bridges are built, crossed, burned, and rebuilt. In celebration of the release, the trio will return to the road including three sold-out shows at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium with more dates to be announced soon.

DESCRIPTION:The highly anticipated follow-up to their breakout 2022 self-titled debut, Thee Sacred Soul’s Got A Story To Tell (Daptone Records) features 12 all original new songs, a soaring statement of exquisite craftsmanship from this young band from San Diego whose own story grows bigger by the day. Millions of monthly listeners on Spotify. Celebrity fans like SZA, Alicia Keys, and Kylie Jenner. An NPR Tiny Desk performance that burned the house down. And all in the first two years of the band’s existence. Then came life on the road.\NSince 2022, Thee Sacred Souls have toured North America and Europe, playing their sweet soul music at dozens and dozens of sold-out headlining shows, and in the process they went from young musicians to a tight-knit, stress-tested band who knew each other like family. All the great bands were made better by life on the road, and Thee Sacred Souls is ready to join that pantheon. Got A Story To Tell is in every way a tighter and emotionally richer record because of their journey.  \NThe challenges of touring resulted in a darker, more mature record, Alejandro Garcia (drums, guitar) says. Salvador Samano (bass, drums) agrees: “As we got busier, we were all dealing with things back home, trying to balance life and music and touring.” Heartbreak, family issues, finding ways to be creative when you’re leaving it all on the stage every night. Every member had their own experience, and no new development went undetected by their bandmates. “You can’t hide how you’re feeling,” Garcia says, of the intimacy of touring. “We know what’s going with each other.”\NBut it’s not as if the songs on Got A Story To Tell, which they began writing at the end of 2022, are accounts of a band on the run; there’s no “Turn the Page” here. Josh Lane (vocals) says all those emotions and personal stories from the three founders were sprinkled into the songwriting to create a potent blend of truth and imagination. In an age where pop stars have their albums treated like chapters in an ongoing memoir, Thee Sacred Souls hearken back to the more universal, relatable school of songwriting that made Hitsville U.S.A. and the Brill Building so successful and timeless.\NLead single and opening song “Lucid Girl” is Thee Sacred Souls’ entry into the canon of pop and R&B songwriting that champions independent women. (Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman” is but one example.) It started as an instrumental that Garcia wrote one Christmas morning, during a moment of quiet heartache and solitude. Driving away from the studio to see family in the afternoon after cutting the track, the phrase popped into his head: “lucid girl.” It was perfect fodder for Lane to start his work.\N“A good instrumental tells a story on its own,” says Lane, and what Garcia laid down that Christmas hit him instantly. It was heavy, with some of the toughest drums and bass of anything the band had recorded, and Garcia’s title conjured the image of a woman who wouldn’t be held down. Like someone lucid dreaming, this woman did what she wanted, how she wanted. “She chose herself and then she grew,” he sings in his pure tenor before the drums hit a stutter-step and the chorus kicks in. The album is full of characters and stories, and “Lucid Girl” sets the stage for what comes after.\NThee Sacred Souls recorded Got A Story To Tell at Penrose Recorders, in Riverside, CA, the studio built by producer and Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco Mann). It’s a simple space some 50 miles east of Los Angeles that offers an unadorned analogue experience. They filled it with immortal grooves, classic vocal harmonies, and sincere, heartfelt lyrics about love and loss—the persistent feelings.\NA ballad of guilty feelings, “My Heart Is Drowning” draws on two pivotal wells of inspiration for the band: Jamaican rocksteady and ‘60s girl-group pop. The spectral slow tempo of rocksteady, with its thick bass lines and simple guitar riffs, is the instrumental basis upon which Lane sings about making his lover cry, eventually losing her. The chorus is beautifully accented with soft and affecting backing vocals that recall the great Motown siren Mary Wells. In its final moments, it takes an unexpected turn toward the sunny, even though the protagonist is still languishing in regret. The tension between the music and lyrics create one of the most beguiling moments on the record.\NListening to the beloved Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai unlocked melodic ideas for Lane while writing “On My Mind,” a breezy stand-out on Got A Story To Tell. The rhythmic shifts on the song evoke the dynamics described in Lane’s lyrics, as he sings about “the good and the bad together…the good and the bad that make this man.” The acknowledgement of life’s total complexity brings one of the most stirring performances out of Lane.\NAny conversation with the band will inevitably turn into a music celebration; the sharing of classic tunes, as they point out specific records that proved important during recording. Mann, their producer, is something of an encyclopedia, and what knowledge he bequeathed to them they’re all too happy to share.  The little-known Philadelphia guy group the Fabulous Performers. The sweeping vocals of the Delfonics. The unreal falsetto of Alton Ellis. The beguiling arrangements from Jesse Boone and the Astros. In part, Thee Sacred Souls are able to make timeless music because they have a deep appreciation for history.\NGot A Story To Tell proves that Thee Sacred Souls are here to stay; a vital force in contemporary music. Though it’s not a concept album, it creates a satisfying emotional arc for the listener, taking them through life’s ups and downs—but finding a happy ending when it counts. The final track “I’m So Glad I Found You, Baby” is the feeling of coming home from a long journey to find your love waiting for you. \NIf the last two years tested the mettle of Thee Sacred Souls, Got A Story To Tell is all that hard work paying off.

The sweeping vocals of the Delfonics. The unreal falsetto of Alton Ellis. The beguiling arrangements from Jesse Boone and the Astros. In part, Thee Sacred Souls are able to make timeless music because they have a deep appreciation for history.</p><p>Got A Story To Tell proves that Thee Sacred Souls are here to stay; a vital force in contemporary music. Though it’s not a concept album, it creates a satisfying emotional arc for the listener, taking them through life’s ups and downs—but finding a happy ending when it counts. The final track “I’m So Glad I Found You, Baby” is the feeling of coming home from a long journey to find your love waiting for you.&nbsp;</p><p>If the last two years tested the mettle of Thee Sacred Souls, Got A Story To Tell is all that hard work paying off.</p>

DESCRIPTION:Live at the Eccles presents JOHN CRAIGIE + GLEN PHILLIPS on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City. ArtTix is the official source for tickets for Live at the Eccles events.\NMuch like community, music nourishes us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It also invites us to come together under the same roof and in a shared moment. In similar fashion, John Craigie rallies a closeness around music anchored by his expressive and stirring songcraft, emotionally charged vocals, lively soundscapes, and uncontainable spirit. The Portland, OR-based singer, songwriter, and producer invites everyone into this space on his 2024 full-length album, Pagan Church. Following tens of millions of streams, sold out shows everywhere, and praise from Rolling Stone and more, he continues to captivate.\N“The music is always evolving and devolving with each new record,” he observes. “With my last album Mermaid Salt, I really wanted to explore the sound of isolation and solitude as everyone was heading inside. With this record, I wanted to record the sound of everyone coming back out.”\NIn order to capture that, he didn’t go about it alone… \NInstead, he joined forces with some local friends. At the time, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings booked a slew of outdoor gigs in Portland and they invited Craigie to sit in for a handful of shows. The musicians instinctively identified an unspoken, yet seamless chemistry with each other. Joined by three of the five members, Craigie cut “Laurie Rolled Me a J” and kickstarted the process. With the full band in tow, they hunkered down in an old schoolhouse TK & The Holy Know-Nothings had converted into a de facto headquarters and studio, and recorded the eleven tracks on Pagan Church.\N“At first, I knew ‘Laurie Rolled Me a J’ would sound great with a band, but we realized there was this chemistry between us,” Craigie recalls.\NDuring this season, Craigie listened to everyone from JJ Cale, Michael Hurley, and The Band to Donny Hathaway and Nina Simone. He also consumed music biographies and documentaries on the likes of Ani DiFranco, John Coltrane, The Velvet Underground, and Neil Young. Now, he introduces the album with “Where It’s From.” Dusty acoustic guitar underlines his warm delivery as he warns, “Be careful with this feeling. You don’t know where it’s from.” Meanwhile, he plugs in the electric guitar on the Southern-style boogie of “While I’m Down.” Bright organ wails over a palm-muted distorted riff as he urges, “Come on and love me up while I’m down.” \NThen, there’s “Good To Ya.” Setting the scene, glowing keys give way to a head-nodding beat. He laments, “Oh babe, I was good to you,” before a bluesy guitar solo practically leaves the fretboard in flames. The album concludes with the pensive and poetic title track “Pagan Church.”  In between echoes of slide guitar, he repeats, “I sing a pagan song out in a pagan church.”\N“Taylor Kingman suggested the title Pagan Church to me,” he reveals. “I liked the multiple meanings. The album cover shows all of us in front of Laurelthirst Public House in Portland, which is an important gathering place for musicians in the area. It’s almost a church in a way. However, the song has an entirely different meaning.”\NAn incredible journey has brought Craigie to this point. He has consistently packed venues across the country, gracing bigger stages each time he rolls through town. His annual #KeepItWarm Tour has become a holiday tradition as it supports regional non-profits focused on fighting food insecurity with a donation of $1 from each ticket purchased. Showcasing another side of his voice, he has recorded “Beatles Lonely” versions of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road,  recording these seminal albums live to sold out audiences, and releasing them on vinyl for Record Store Day 2022 & 2023. Beyond touring with Langhorne Slim, Brett Dennen, and Bella White, he has also sold out his annual river trip on the Tuolumne River, just outside of Yosemite in California and graced the bills of Newport Folk Festival, Pickathon, Mariposa Folk Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, and many more.\NIn the end, Craigie channels the power of community in Pagan Church.\NHe leaves off, “I just hope you can hear the collaboration with this amazing band of musicians and hear the energy in the songs of people who are allowed to get out and do their art again in this chaotic world.”

SUMMARY:Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (Night 1)

DESCRIPTION:A Jason Isbell record always lands like a decoder ring in the ears and hearts of his audience—a soundtrack to his world and, magically, to theirs as well. Weathervanes carries the same revelatory power. This is a storyteller at the peak of his craft, observing his fellow wanderers, looking inward, and trying to understand, reducing a universe to four minutes. He shrinks life small enough to name the fear and then strip it away, helping his listeners make sense of how two plus two stops equaling four once you carry a certain amount of scars.\N“There is something about boundaries on this record,” Isbell says. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”\NWeathervanes is a collection of grown-up songs: songs about adult love, change, the danger of nostalgia, and interrogating myths; songs about cruelty, regret, and redemption. These are life-and-death songs played for and by grown-ass people. Some will make you cry alone in your car, while others will make you sing along with thousands of strangers in a big summer pavilion, united in the great miracle of being alive. The record features the rolling thunder of Isbell’s fearsome 400 Unit, a band that has earned its place in the rock ‘n’ roll cosmos alongside legendary backing ensembles like The E Street Band and The Wailers.\NThe 400 Unit makes a big noise, as Isbell puts it, and he feels so comfortable letting them be a main prism through which much of the world hears his art. With them behind him, he transforms, becoming a version of himself that can only exist in their presence. Solo, Isbell commands the entire performance; with the 400 Unit, he can choose to be a guitar hero, a conductor, or a fan of his own bandmates, marveling at their sound.\NThe roots of this record go back to the isolation of the pandemic and Isbell’s time on the set of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. There were guitars in his trailer and a lot of time to sit and think. The melancholy yet soaring track “King of Oklahoma” was written during this time. Watching Scorsese work, Isbell observed the interplay of clear vision and collaboration—how even someone as decorated as Scorsese sought out and valued his co-workers’ input.\N“It definitely helped when I got into the studio,” Isbell says. “I had this reinvigorated sense of collaboration. You can have an idea and execute it without compromise—and still listen to the other people in the room.”

DESCRIPTION:Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four, he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band he assembled for his Electric Church World Tour. Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player, though. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, flip on any late-night or morning TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them.\NSince 2010, he’s released five chart topping studio albums (his most recent being 2022’s Lifted); toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Starr, and countless more; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; performed four times at the GRAMMY Awards, six times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet; launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education; and received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book.\NMeanwhile in New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Treme Threauxdown shows that have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges to sit in with his band, and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s hallowed final set, which has seen him closing out the internationally renowned gathering after performances by the likes of Neil Young, the Black Keys, and Kings of Leon.\NIn addition to touring across the globe nearly year-round, Trombone Shorty has started a very special tradition: a cultural exchange trip to Cuba with his Trombone Shorty Foundation. The fourth trip of his kind will take place in January of 2025, and includes an ever-expanding group of special guests artists who join Shorty and his Foundation to host workshops and play concerts in Cuba over a 5-day period, as well as nearly 100 students. These exchange programs have previously been featured on NPR and CBS Mornings.\NLifted, Trombone Shorty’s second release for Blue Note Records and 5th solo LP, was released in 2022. Recorded at Shorty’s own Buckjump Studio with producer Chris Seefried (Fitz and the Tantrums, Andra Day), the album finds the GRAMMY-nominated NOLA icon and his bandmates tapping into the raw power and exhilarating grooves of their legendary live show, channeling it all into a series of tight, explosive performances that blur the lines between funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. The writing is bold and self-assured, standing up to hard times and loss with grit and determination, and the playing is muscular to match, mixing pop gleam with hip-hop swagger and second line abandon. Wild as all that may sound, Lifted is still the work of a master craftsman, and the album’s nimble arrangements and judicious use of special guests—from Gary Clark Jr. and Lauren Daigle to the rhythm section from Shorty’s high school marching band—ultimately yields a collection that’s as refined as it is rapturous, one that balances technical virtuosity and emotional release in equal measure as it celebrates music’s primal power to bring us all together.\NSince the release of Lifted, Shorty and his band have made appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, TODAY and Good Morning America, and CBS Mornings. Shorty has also recently performed at the MusiCares pre-GRAMMY Awards gala, the Roots Picnic with Lil Wayne, on the instantly legendary NPR Tiny Desk featuring Juvenile, and at the White House’s 2024 Juneteenth concert. His recent 2024 summer tour featured special guest Big Boi and included a stop at the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

DESCRIPTION:Lake Street Dive have pushed the possibilities of pop music as a unifying force, not only through their eclectic sound—a boldly original cross-pollination of soul, folk, jazz, classic pop, and more—the five-piece’s all-embracing ethos has also made them a beloved live band known for building a potent connection among every crowd. In the making of their new album Good Together, vocalist Rachael Price, bassist/background vocalist Bridget Kearney, drummer/background vocalist Mike Calabrese, keyboardist/vocalist Akie Bermiss, and guitarist/background vocalist James Cornelison reinforced the deep sense of purpose behind their output, often turning their attention to the many factors driving us apart today (e.g., unchecked technological growth, culturally imposed isolation, the cult of relentless self-optimization). Born from a mindset they refer to as “joyful rebellion,” Good Together arrives as a body of work both gloriously defiant and primed to inspire unbridled dancing and ecstatic singing-along.\N“There’s a lot to be angry about in the world right now, a lot of pain and rage and divisiveness, but it isn’t sustainable to constantly live in that anger—you need something else to keep you going,” says Calabrese. “Joy is a great way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to encourage everyone to stay aware of that. In a way this album is our way of saying, ‘Take your joy very seriously.’”\NIn keeping with that spirit of communal uplift, Lake Street Dive’s eighth full-length marks the first time they’ve ever worked together in the earliest and most vulnerable stages of songwriting. Back in early 2023, the band’s members met up at Calabrese’s home studio in Vermont and spent nearly a week generating new songs, catalyzing the process with the help of a 20-sided die (a holdover from the many Zoom-based Dungeons & Dragons matches held by Bermiss and Kearney during lockdown). “The captain of a particular song would roll the die, and the result would decide the chords, the meter, and the tempo for that song,” Kearney explains. “We’d take those elements and jam for a while, go our separate ways and come up with lyrics and melodies, then come back together and workshop everything. It ended up taking us to new places we never would’ve gotten to otherwise, in terms of things like harmony and tempo and groove.” Along with expanding their musical palette and expressive range, that highly collaborative approach helped the band reach a new level of intimacy. “In the past we’d written pieces of songs and shared them with each other and built them up from there, but we always had the space to listen and reflect in total privacy,” says Price. “At first it was terrifying to write together in the same room, but as soon as we got started it felt so fun. We very quickly realized, ‘Oh, we need to do this again and again.’”\NThe follow-up to Obviously—a 2021 LP acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone, who noted that “[a]t a moment when pop strives for lo-fi, solitary-world intimacy, the jazz-pop-whatever band refuse to think small”—Good Together finds Lake Street Dive working again with Grammy-winning producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Gary Clark Jr.) and recording at his Phantom Studios in Tennessee. With its sonic landscape encompassing everything from R&B to funk to Brazilian pop, the album opens on the radiant synth of its title track: an exultant duet between Bermiss and Price that arose from a happy accident. “‘Good Together’ came from a dice roll where I was captain, but when I went to go work on the production I cut it up wrong and ended up with a very weird time signature,” Bermiss recalls. “It somehow worked anyway, and Bridget came up with the narrative of two people from dubious backgrounds and trying to start over together.” One of several tracks featuring the horn section from Brooklyn-based jazz band Huntertones, the result is a left-of-center love song celebrating the thrill of defying expectation and following your heart’s desire.\NNext, on “Dance with a Stranger,” Lake Street Dive once again prove their undeniable gift for crafting feel-good songs with an illuminating message. “I went on a solo writing retreat in Kingston, New York, and ended up attending a square dance at a VFW hall,” says Kearney in discussing the song’s origins. “It was a group of people from all generations and all walks of life, all there dancing together, which made me think, ‘What if we could write a song that helped to create that kind of connection at our shows?’” Lit up in lush grooves, glistening textures, and exuberant gang vocals calling out instruction (“Left, right, front, side/Find somebody new and then/Take them by the hand and/Say you understand”), “Dance with a Stranger” ultimately achieves the singular feat of inducing a carefree euphoria while gently fostering empathy.\NAlthough much of Good Together emerged from Lake Street Dive’s incisive observation of the outside world, many songs mine inspiration from the intricacies of their own lives. To that end, “Walking Uphill” took shape as Price thumbed through her journal from seven years earlier, then transformed a series of underlined passages into a gripping meditation on the work of self-repair. “It’s about the idea of toil turning into something beautiful, so we wanted it to sound intense and gritty but with some catharsis at the end,” notes Price, whose vocals shift into exquisitely raw abandon in the track’s final moments. Originated by Calabrese, the luminous and summery “Seats at the Bar” puts a sweetly playful twist on the classic love song, unfolding in tropicália-esque rhythms and the breezy but elegant percussion of guest musician Abe Rounds (Andrew Bird, Blake Mills, Emily King). “When my wife and I first met she was in the wine industry, and sometimes I’d visit restaurants with her and we’d end up staying for dinner and sitting at the bar,” says Calabrese. “It was fun to write a love song about bucking trends in our own little way—sort of like, ‘Enjoy your fancy table with your fancy tablecloth; we’ll be over here eating french fries and having a good time together.’” And on “Twenty-Five,” Price delivers a stark and lovely ballad steeped in tender reminiscence of a long-ago romance, her voice accompanied only by Bermiss’ gorgeously understated performance on piano. “It’s about a great love that was never meant to last, but you still end up carrying it with you for the rest of your life,” says Kearney. “I thought that was a beautiful sentiment, but it also ties into the theme of the album and the whole question of, ‘How can we as a species continue to love one another, in spite of all the challenges we face?’”\NAll throughout Good Together, Lake Street Dive reveal the immense expanse of their musicality and expressive imagination. On “Better Not Tell You,” for instance, the band presents a ’70s-funk-inspired dance track Bermiss originally penned from the perspective of the three witches in Macbeth, while “Far Gone” serves up a bouncy piece of psych-rock exploring what Price sums up as “this existential crisis where we’re all realizing we’re addicted to technology before we even got a chance to take a step back from it.” Closing out the album with the dreamlike grandeur of “Set Sail (Prometheus & Eros)”—a Bermiss-Price duet featuring a spellbinding string arrangement from Rob Moose (The National, St. Vincent, Bon Iver)—Lake Street Dive also endlessly tap into the palpable camaraderie that’s fueled the band since they formed in Boston back in 2004.\NLake Street Dive continue to fully embody the effusive sense of togetherness and mutual care embraced throughout Good Together. “At this point our tastes in music differ more than they ever have, but we’re still able to bring all those influences together with a real love and respect for the diversity within the band,” says Price. “I think the main thing that’s kept us going over the years is that very strong foundation of friendship—everyone has a voice, everyone gets heard, and we’re all really careful about looking out for each other’s happiness.”

DESCRIPTION:Live at the Eccles presents GILLIAN WELCH AND DAVID RAWLINGS on June 22, 2025 at the Capitol Theater downtown Salt Lake City. ArtTix is the official source for tickets for Live at the Eccles events.\NGillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty-five years, and she and her musical partner David Rawlings are a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. They have been hailed by Pitchfork as “modern masters of American folk” and “protectors of the American folk song” by Rolling Stone.\NAfter moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival, produced by T Bone Burnett, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release, Welch followed up that GRAMMY nominated album release with 1998’s Hell Among The Yearlings, a stark duet record with Rawlings, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene.\NFor her work as executive producer as well as a performer and songwriter on the eight times platinum O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Welch was awarded the Album of the Year GRAMMY,and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label, Acony Records, helping to establish the duo’s fierce commitment to independent music.\N2003’s Soul Journey was the pair’s first experimentation with a fuller, electric sound, which paved the way for the Dave Rawlings Machine project, and their first release under Rawlings’ name (A Friend of A Friend, 2009), which was accompanied by a time period of heavy touring and headlining major festivals while biding their time to return to the duet sound the two were traditionally known for. 2011’s The Harrow and The Harvestwas nominated for for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Engineered Album at the GRAMMYs, and won Artist of the Year (Welch) and was nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year (Rawlings) at the Americana Honors & Awards. The album garnered glowing reviews and topped multiple year end “Best Of” lists.\NIn celebration of the twenty year anniversary of the Welch-Rawlings partnership, the two launched an archival branch of Acony Records, entitled Boots, dedicated to releasing outtakes, demos, bootlegs, and live recordings from their copious vault. Thus far they have released five album’s worth of music with more on the way.\NRecently, they were crowned with the Berklee American Masters Award and honored by Americana Music Association with a Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting.\NWelch and Rawlings continue to tour the world in support of their music while simultaneously writing and lending their talents to countless fellow artists’ projects. They are continuously working to release their acclaimed catalog on phonograph records of the highest possible fidelity.

DESCRIPTION:Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as "Bring Me Some Water," "No Souvenirs" and "Ain't It Heavy," for which she won a Grammy in 1992. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was distinguished by the hit single, "I Want to Come Over." Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.\NKnown for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America's favorite female singers for more than two decades. In February 2007, Melissa Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the "Best Song" category at the Academy Awards for "I Need to Wake Up," written for the Al Gore documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed "inconvenient truths" to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy telecast to sing "Piece of My Heart" in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.\NOn October 7, 2016 Melissa Etheridge released Memphis Rock & Soul, her first album since 2014's critically lauded This Is M.E. Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. She followed that up with the release of The Medicine Show in April, 2019. For The Medicine Show, Melissa reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks and sounds as rousing as ever, bringing a new level of artistry to her 15th studio recording.\NIn June of 2020, Etheridge launched The Etheridge Foundation to support groundbreaking scientific research into effective new treatments for opioid use disorder. The Foundation works towards advancing treatment approaches that address the root causes of opioid abuse and make available better, more effective solutions for people to truly heal their opioid use disorder.\NIn 2021, Melissa returned with then album One Way Out. The 9-track album is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late '80s and early '90s that never made the cut… .until now! The time was finally right, and fans finally got a deeper glimpse to who Melissa was then.\NOctober 2022 saw Melissa's return to the theatre with her one woman show, My Window — A Journey Through Life. The critically acclaimed, sold-out run premiered at New World Stages on October 13 and opened at Circle In the Square Theatre on Broadway in September 2023.\N2024 saw Melissa release Melissa Etheridge: I'm Not Broken, a two-part docuseries (Paramount+) and accompanying live album. DESCRIPTION:Singer/songwriter Max McNown creates the kind of songs that soundtrack our most intimate moments: times of intense heartache and tremendous loss, immense upheaval and life-changing revelation. Within just a year of teaching himself to play guitar, the Nashville-based artist set off on a meteoric rise largely fueled by his breakout single “A Lot More Free”—a RIAA Gold-certified track whose explosive success includes peaking at #1 on the iTunes singles chart and earning him a #1 spot on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart. Following the release of his widely lauded debut album Wandering, the Willfully Blind EP, and his acclaimed sophomore album Night Diving, the 23-year-old Oregon native continued his fast ascent to stardom and made his TV performance debut with an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in early 2025, in addition to selling out his first-ever headline tour within just hours. Named a 2025 Artist To Watch by Amazon Music, Holler, and Country Now, McNown now embarks on a thrilling new chapter with Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up): a 21-song powerhouse that shows the complete depth of his artistry like never before.\NA drastically expanded edition of his sophomore LP, Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up) features 11 never-before-heard tracks built on McNown’s quietly potent form of folk/country. “Even though Night Diving was the length of a full album, in my heart it never felt complete to me,” he reveals. “All of these songs were written in the same time period, and my intention was always to have them be one body of work.” Still, McNown points out that the previously unreleased songs surfaced from a recent evolution of his mesmerizing sound, spotlighting an earthy tonality informed by his upbringing in the Pacific Northwest. “Since my first EP I’ve been on the hunt to find myself as a musician, and with this album, I’ve officially made something that fully represents me, both sonically and in my songwriting,” he says. Produced by Jamie Kenney (Colbie Caillat, Laci Kaye Booth) and made with an A-list lineup of session players, Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up) ultimately provides an extraordinary vessel for his profoundly moving and soul-baring storytelling.\NAnchored in the charmingly warm vocal presence that McNown partly honed by busking at the beach in Southern California, Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up) takes the latter half of its title from a gorgeously textured track that perfectly exemplifies his newly refined sound. With its rootsy yet ethereal instrumentation—luminous steel guitar, lush mandolin, soulful organ—“The Cost of Growing Up” arrives as a clear-eyed but melancholy meditation on the inevitability of pain (from the second verse: “Ain’t it interesting/That diamonds come from coal, and steel gets sharper the more time spent in the flame/And there’s consistency/Between heartbreak and ashes/Scraped knees and taxes/One step back for every two you gain”). “To me, the cost of growing up is an acceptance that difficult things are going to happen—from minor inconveniences to devastating loss, it’s all a part of life,” says McNown. “But there’s also beauty in that because, without those hard moments, you wouldn’t be able to truly love.”\NIn the making of Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up), McNown revisited the title track from the original album: a lived-in meditation on cycles of addiction, set against a spellbinding backdrop of otherworldly textures, moody guitar tones, and strangely haunting rhythms. This time around, he includes a feature from Cameron Whitcomb—a rising singer/songwriter who’s written extensively about his personal history with addiction, and whose force-of-nature vocals add a raw and fiery intensity to the new version of “Night Diving.” “One of the things I respect above all else is authenticity and honesty in music, and Cam is the epitome of that,” says McNown. “When I started thinking about a feature on that song, I knew there was no better person than Cam to join me. He gave it so much energy and his voice is so distinct, and now the song has a whole new life to it.” \NElsewhere on Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up), McNown lets his inner hopeless romantic shine on songs like the unstoppably joyful “Forever Ain’t Long Enough.” A glorious counterpart to “Better Me For You (Brown Eyes)”—a lilting and dreamlike standout from Night Diving, written when he’d first started dating his girlfriend—“Forever Ain’t Long Enough” rushes forward with a pulse-pounding velocity as McNown lists off all the places he hopes to travel with his beloved (“Let’s chase horizons off the Catalina coastline/Jeep ride all the way to Santa Fe/Sip a coffee to a Montana sunrise/Say goodnight to the Colorado rain”). “It’s about finding somebody who makes it seem like even your entire lifetime isn’t long enough to spend with them,” McNown explains. “It’s saying, ‘Let’s love each other to the best of our abilities and take advantage of every single day, because we know the next day is never promised.’” Meanwhile, on the heavy-hearted but exquisitely catchy “Same Questions,” McNown writes from an outside point of view and explores everything that’s lost when a love story ends. “It’s about going through a breakup and not wanting to deal with the process of going back to square one and getting to know a new person,” he says. “That’s a brutal but relatable experience, and I liked the idea of writing something sad but putting it to a happy folk melody.”\NIn August 2022, McNown headed for Southern California and crashed with his aunt and uncle in San Clemente, where he soon learned to play his dad’s guitar (a gift handed off just as he was leaving home) and showed a friend a song he’d penned in high school. “I didn’t have a lot of faith in myself, but my friend encouraged me to go down to the San Clemente Pier and play that song and see what happened,” he says. “That night I made 93 bucks, and also got a free taco and a girl’s phone number folded into a $5 bill.” As he gained greater confidence in his guitar and vocal skills, McNown started posting covers online and quickly amassed a devoted following while building up a stash of original songs. Released in April 2023, his first official song “Freezing in November” surpassed a million streams in just a few months, paving the way for his signing with Fugitive Recordings. Along with delivering his debut EP A Lot More Free that August, McNown turned out a series of rapturously received singles—racking up 80 million streams in his very first year of releasing music. The following April, he released Wandering and earned critical praise from the likes of People and Holler, with the LP later landing on Whiskey Riff’s list of the year’s best debut albums.\NSince the arrival of Wandering, Willfully Blind, and Night Diving, McNown has fully claimed his place in the music spotlight. To that end, Kelly Clarkson covered “A Lot More Free” on her show just a month before inviting him on to perform “Better Me For You (Brown Eyes).” Over the past couple of years alone, he’s also shared bills with Wynonna Judd, Wyatt Flores, Michael Marcagi, Sam Barber, Billy Currington, Trampled by Turtles, JOSEPH, and more; toured with Briscoe and Blake Rose; traveled overseas to perform at the C2C: Country to Country festival; and made his debut at the legendary Grand Ole Opry. With his 2025 schedule including his debut headline tour (a massive soldout run with stops across the U.S. and in Europe, the UK, and Australia)—as well as spots on major festivals like Lollapalooza, Boston Calling, and CMA Fest—McNown has undoubtedly cemented his reputation as a captivating live act. “I feel like I’ve found myself as a performer and gained the courage to enjoy the moment,” he says. “One of the biggest highlights was going to C2C and playing for upwards of 15,000 people and hearing them sing along to ‘A Lot More Free.’ It always takes my breath away to look out and see the crowd belting that song at the top of their lungs.”\NLooking back on Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up), McNown notes that the newly added batch of songs embody a far more hopeful mood compared with the album’s original tracklist. “Even on ‘The Cost of Growing Up,’ which is one of the saddest songs, there’s an undertone of optimism and a clear silver lining,” he says. And while that optimism was entirely intentional on McNown’s part, he’s highly aware that his music tends to stir up incredibly complex emotions in listeners. “I’ve heard some heavy stories from fans, including someone nearing suicide and feeling as though they were saved by ‘It’s Not Your Fault,’” he says, referring to a particularly poignant track from Night Diving. “It’s amazing how a song can be written about a specific experience, and then you can be told a hundred different stories about the experiences that other people hear in that same song. But I’d never invalidate anyone’s story—the important thing is that people relate to the song and feel heard and less alone. That’s exactly what I’m doing all this for.”

“One of the biggest highlights was going to C2C and playing for upwards of 15,000 people and hearing them sing along to ‘A Lot More Free.’ It always takes my breath away to look out and see the crowd belting that song at the top of their lungs.”</p><p>Looking back on Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up), McNown notes that the newly added batch of songs embody a far more hopeful mood compared with the album’s original tracklist. That’s exactly what I’m doing all this for.”</p>

It was 1995, the era of furrow-browed grungesters, when a sandy-haired guitar prodigy unapologetically celebrated a genre often pushed to the margins. With his fiery fretwork, pop-rock hooks, and reverence for the blues, Shepherd’s arrival was a much-needed palette-cleanser from the existential dread of the times.\NNow, three decades later, Shepherd is as vital as ever.
